How To Get More Social Media Followers (And Why You Should Try Something Else First)
If you look at Craigslist and job boards, you’ll see individuals and small businesses constantly posting things like,
- “Help me get more followers on twitter!”
- “I want 1,000 new fans on my Facebook page asap”
- “How do I get more fans?”
If you’ve found yourself wanting the above, you’re far from alone.
While there’s nothing wrong with having a larger audience, the planning that went into these requests for getting more followers isn’t usually well thought out.
For example, once you get all these followers… what will do you? How will you engage with them? What will make them want to follow you or buy from you? Do you plan to advertise to them?
“Wait, I Need To Put Thought Into This?”
Social media is a free platform, but that doesn’t mean doing successful business on it is obvious or easy. So yes, thinking is required.
I’ve had interactions where people had no idea what social media was supposed to be doing for them, and wanted to have nothing to do with it… but they wanted to pay someone just to get more followers.
Would you do the same if installing a telephone system for your business? That’s a communication platform too.
“I want everyone to have my phone number, make that happen.” But you have no plans to have someone answer the phone.
That’s pretty much what’s going on with social media.
The Best Strategy Is To Have One
Before you start looking for more followers on social media, you may want to re-examine what you’re doing.
If you already have social profiles, it may be more effective to change the way you interact with your existing audience first…
- Share more relevant, useful, and interesting content
- Reply to questions from your audience
- Ask questions for how you can better serve them
- Give a peek behind-the-scenes of whatever it is you do
Do this enough and other people will share your content. You’ll never have to worry about growing your follower count because your audience will do it for you.
If you are getting little result for your effort on social media, having more followers will not change the result. Are you getting no result? Then more followers will give you more of that.
Change your plan to something that will lead to interaction and results… then getting more followers will be much easier.
